Mirror

Lyrics

The drum beats low like a heart gone still
Shadows crawl on the church windowsill
I walk in slow the air feels tight
Candles flicker in the funeral light

A hymn hums soft it wraps me cold
My name’s whispered like a story told

And I see me lying there
Eyes closed, hands bare
Mirror in the casket staring back at me
Oh I see me lying there
Breath lost, no air
Mirror in the casket — Who am I meant to be?

The preacher speaks but his voice feels far
Like chasing echoes in an empty jar
I’m standing here but I’m six feet deep
The living watch while the ghosts all weep

A sigh escapes it bends the room
I’m both the witness and the tomb

And I see me lying there
Eyes closed hands bare
Mirror in the casket staring back at me
Oh I see me lying there
Breath lost no air
Mirror in the casket — Who am I meant to be?

Thoughts About This Song…

Mirror’s working title was “Mirror in the Casket.” The song is an upbeat and subtly humorous look into what it would be like to see oneself at their own funeral.

Initially, the idea of seeing one’s self lying in a casket is a shock. How could it not be? The shock is followed by a haunting confrontation with mortality and identity. This scenario vividly illustrates the tension between life and death and the liminal space between. A powerful exploration of regret as well as a reminder of the beauty and fragility of life, it encourages reflection on how we view mortality, the importance of living fully, pushing back against the mundane requirements of life— or working steadfastly within them — to find one’s calling and through it purpose,  identity, and community.

The pacing of the song was intended to alternately emphasize the apprehension of dealing with the reality of our limited lifespans and the urgency of the question it evokes.

The more we listen to it, the more we agree that the song’s central question, “Who am I meant to be?” is best asked (and answered) before one finds themselves looking in the mirror in a casket. It’s really not the question you want to be asking after it’s too late to find your purpose in life!
